1966 ficou marcado por diversas razões. Foi o último ano em que os Beatles fizeram shows, incomodados pelo fato de a plateia pouco se importar com o que eles tocavam no palco - bastava aparecer para a histeria ser coletiva.
O ano viu o surgimento de bandas que seriam importantíssimas nos anos seguintes, como The Bar-Kays, Jeff Beck Group, Buffalo Springfield, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron Butterfly, Moby Grape, Monkees, Mutantes, Slade, Soft Machine, Steve Miller Band, Ten Years After, Taste, Vanilla Fudge e muitos outros. Por outros lado, alguns artistas encerraram suas carreiras, os mais notáveis sendo The Ronettes e Gerry and the Pacemakers.

A notícia triste foi a morte de Mississippi John Hurt. O bluesman faleceu no dia 2 de novembro de 1966. Entre os nascimentos, nomes como Marco Hietala (Nightwish), Jeff Healey, Marc Ford (Black Crowes), Jason Bonham, Jeff Buckley, Sinéad O’Connor, Dexter Holland (Offspring) e Chris Robinson (Black Crowes).
