Desde que o rock surgiu, os solos vieram juntos. O momento em que os versos e os refrãos são esquecidos, o guitarrista dá uns passos à frente e fica no centro do palco, oferecendo uma melodia (ou um ataque ou seja lá o que for) que define a música. Em alguns casos, os próprios solos são a música, mais famosos e reverenciados do que a canção a qual fazem parte.
